Family Matters - Changing Times

Times are changing dramatically. When I got home from elementary school back in the early 70’s, I watched “Leave it to Beaver”, “The Dick van Dike Show”, and “I Love Lucy”. In High School, my favorite video games were “Asteroids” and “Pac Man”.

Today’s youth sees more sex and violence on TV in three months than what I saw from Kindergarten through High School. And in most of today’s video games, the better “Killer” you are, the more points you get.

What are the consequences of these changes in the Youth Culture? For one thing, the generation gap has widened dramatically in the last 50 years.

Believe it or not, the top 7 problems in schools in the 1940’s were…

1) Talking in Class
2) Chewing Gum
3) Making Noise
4) Running in Halls
5) Cutting in Line
6) Dressing Code Violations
7) Littering

The top 7 problems in schools in the 1990’s are…

1) Drug Abuse
2) Alcohol Abuse
3) Teen Pregnancy
4) Suicide
5) Rape
6) Robbery
7) Assault

In both cases, at the core, these problems are a rebellion against authority. They are an issue of the heart. It comes down to character issues. To knowing the difference between wrong and right. If parents hope to be able to influence their kids, they need to make an effort to understand today’s youth culture.

I have the privilege to speak to thousands of teenagers. As I learn more about what hopes, fears, and needs today’s youth has, I will pass the knowledge on to you.
