Houston ChronicleThe Iceman Traineth Ruben Gonzalez is devoting all his time and money toward excelling in a sport that has been called "the last pocket of wonderful insanity left in the Olympics ." Gonzalez, a chemistry student at Houston Baptist University, wants to compete in the luge in the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics. Lugeing means lying on a four foot long, 50 pound sled and hurling yourself down an icy chute for almost a mile at over 70 MPH. It is fast, cold, and dangerous - none of which bothers Gonzalez. "Ever since I can remember, that was my dream, to be in the Olympics." he says. At first he thought he might play soccer, but he was not good enough. Then, in 1984, he watched the Sarajevo Winter Olympics on TV and decided to go for it. "Luge caught my fancy - like jumping out of an airplane. I finally found something I can excel in if I put enough effort, time and energy in. I truly believed I would make it."
