Three-time Olympian Brings Motivation to IU Kokomo Kokomo Tribune - 9/28/03 Ruben Gonzalez flipped through Olympic sports lists to pick the sport he's ultimately compete in - the luge. An average athlete, Gonzalez said he knew this was the sport for him because it required determination. He saw that if he could hang in, others would quit and he would move ahead. "The luge took perseverance, which is what I have." Gonzalez said. "It was a dream. Struggle to victory. That's how winners operate." A three-time Olympian, Gonzalez was an average athlete, a second string soccer player on his college soccer team. Ruben comes to Kokomo to give his motivational talk, using his Olympic experience and touches of humor to spread his message of "Becoming Unstoppable." Gonzalez speaks to corporations and schools all over the world. "If you refuse to quit, it's a matter of time before you reach your goals. Perseverance and doing whatever it takes always leads to success. I wasn't even a great athlete and I competed in the Olympics three times!" In 1984, when he was 21, something happened that changed Gonzalez life - he saw Scott Hamilton win the Gold Medal at the Sarajevo Winter Olympics. That inspired him to find a sport and train for the Olympics. "Seeing Hamilton win gave me hope." While most Olympic luge athletes begin luging at age 12, Gonzalez was 21 before he got on a luge. Against all odds, four years later he was competing in the Olympics. Ruben competed in the 1988 Calgary, 1992 Albertville, and in the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics. He was one of 200 Olympians selected to be a torchbearer during the Salt Lake City games. Gonzalez describes the luge as a 50 lb, four foot sled with no brakes. In competition, the sled and pilot hurl at over 80 MPH down a mile long chute of ice that starts 50 stories up the mountain. "Once you start, you're committed. There's no stopping." His talks are motivational. How he arrived in Queens, NY fron Argentina at age six with his parents and was teased in school for not knowing English. The first part of his talk is about how he did not believe in himself and what steps he took to change that. Ruben teaches people how to rise to the top. "Hopefully I can be their Scott Hamilton - someone who inspires them to do what it takes to change. What I say won't change them. I can't do that. Change is an inside job. It's all up to them. My job is to inspire and to leave my audience with some concrete steps they can take to get to the next level." Ruben gives his message to students and CEO's. "Success principles are universal. They work anywhere, anytime, and for anybody. I'm just here to give people hope that if I could do what I did, they can do great things too."
