Tom Hopkins, Janelle, Cheryl and Ruben in Scotsdale

Dinner in the Arizona desert with Tom and Janelle Hopkins and my wife Cheryl…

Just got back from speaking at Tom Hopkins’ Sales Boot Camp. Cheryl and I got to spend three great days in Scotsdale with 700 top salespeople. Tom’s organization is a class act. It was a pleasure to have the opportunity to be part of the event.

Tom’s company develops Sales Champions. And it turns out that Tom has his own “Champion’s Creed.” I’m going to share it with you because just like my Champion’s Creed, it is based on universal principles that will work for anyone, anywhere, anytime. Not just for sales people.

Of course, whether you know it or not, everyone, including you, is in sales. If you’ve ever been out on a date and especially if you’re married… you’re in sales. You have to sell yourself to other people every day to achieve your goals and dreams.

Tom Hopkins’ Champion’s Creed

I’m not judged by how many times I fail but by the number of times I succeed.

The number of times I succeed is in direct proportion to the number of times I fail but keep trying.

Ruben and Tom Hopkins

Ruben and Tom Hopkins flying in between speaking engagements…

I’m off to Scottsdale to speak at Tom Hopkins Sales Bootcamp. It will be great getting to hang out with 700 of the top salespeople in America. Some of the other presenters will be Dave Ramsey, author of “The Total Money Makeover,” and John Miller, author of “The Question Behing the Question,” and “Flipping the Switch.” Scottsdale in August… 115 Degrees!

I’m sure one of the topics discussed will be belief. Because unless you believe in yourself, none of the sales techniques Tom teaches will work. Here are some thoughts on belief…

Gabriela brushing teeth

6-year-old Gabriela brushing her teeth this morning…

The time… 7:21 AM. I heard some noise in our bathroom, grabbed the camera, and caught a great Kodak Moment. Gabriela, our six-year-old Princess, brushing her teeth on her own initiative. That’s right! No one had to tell her to brush her teeth!

People Skills Tips - How to Make People Feel Important

Sunday, August 20th, 2006

One of people’s top needs is the need to feel important. By becoming skillful at making others feel important, others will respond more positively to you and to your ideas. By the way, this stuff will only work if you are sincere. If you are trying to use this to manipulate people, they’ll know, and it won’t work.

The Olympics Helped Reunite His Family

Ruben, Renato, and Marcelo (Ruben’s brother) at Salt Lake Opening Ceremonies

My brother Marcelo and I trained for the Salt Lake City Olympics for 5 years side by side with Renato Mizoguchi (the little guy in the middle), and we didn’t know a thing about his family background.

Renato competed in the luge for Brazil. He’s one of those happy-go-lucky guys that doesn’t say much, but somehow brightens a room with his big smile. He speaks very little English so even though we traveled together for years, we didn’t know much about him.

Ildiko Strehli

Ildiko Strehli in her “Sled Full of Hope”

A couple of days after finishing my competition at the Salt Lake City Olympics I was sitting in the Olympic Village Coffee Shop drinking my standard four shot expresso. There, I met an incredible lady. Ildiko Strehli of Hungary.

She was in her mid thirties and I was 39, so we both stood out like sore thumbs in amongst the other athletes (The average age for winter Olympians is early twenties, when you walk in the Olympic Village it feels like you’re in a college campus where everybody’s in great shape. I looked so much older than the other athletes that almost every day someone would ask me if I was a coach!).

I asked her what her story was. How she’d gotten to the Olympics. Her story blew me away!

Chick-fil-A

Ruben Making Chick-fil-A Sandwiches in 1978 and Manager Steve Mason in Foreground

My first job in high school back in 1978 was working at Chick-fil-A. We had a horrible location up in a dark corner of the second floor of a small shopping mall in Houston. Back then Chick-fil-A had only 141 stores nationwide. But we were consistently in the top ten stores in sales.

Why did our store perform so well? It was all because of our Manager’s leadership. Our manager, Steve Mason was the Gung Ho, motivator type that made working at a fast food restaurant a blast. Steve was always focused on making work fun and on getting us to constantly produce at a high level. There was always some kind of a contest going on.

K9 Officer and Drug Dog

K9 Officer and Drug Dog

I was speaking in Pittsburgh a few weeks ago. One of the other presenters was a Police Canine Officer. He brought his German Shephard and was telling us about the training drug and explosive sniffing K9s.

It turns out that a top drug dog is literally one in a million…

The Price of Success

Ruben and Rudy Ruettiger

Ruben and Rudy Ruettiger

Average people expect their dreams and goals to fall on their lap. They are not willing to inconvenience themselves for their dreams. They refuse to do anything outside their comfort zone to reach their dreams. They don’t stand for anything, they don’t commit to anything and they just drift through life. That’s why they are average. Because they are not willing to do what successful people are willing to do. Consequently, they don’t live life, they merely exist. They just take up space.

In order to succeed in life, you have to be willing to inconvenience yourself in a big way. You have to be willing to commit to yourself and to your dream. You have to be willing to face your fears and do some things that are very uncomfortable. You have to be willing to do the things average people are not willing to do. You see, success is not about aptitude. It’s about attitude. It’s about having the attitude that you are willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done.

The Right Way to Use Affirmations to Achieve More

Mohammad Ali

When Muhammad Ali said, ”I am the GREATEST!” He was doing several things at once; he was psyching out his opponents, he was branding himself, he was getting publicity, but most importantly, he was conditioning his subconscious mind to help him become “The Greatest.”

You can program your subconscious mind to become an automatic “guiding system” that will help you realize your goals, dreams and aspirations.
