Edison Museum

Holding one of Edison’s first light bulbs. Original phonograph and portrait of Edison behind me.

I was just in New Jersey where I spoke for a leadership meeting of Kean University students. On the way to the meeting I got to visit the Thomas Edison Menlo Park Museum. the museum is only 20 minutes from the Newark Liberty Airport. If you’re ever there, it’s a must see.

The museum sits where Edison’s laboratories used to be (they burned down many years ago). If you’re ever in Lansing, MI, you can visit a replica of the laboratory (Henry Ford, one of Edison’s mentees, had them rebuilt in Michigan).

Jack Stanley, the curator, has been studying Edison for over 30 years. Stan’s a great guy who can entertain you with great Edison stories for hours.

Dick Bass and “Seven Summits”

Seven Summits Dick Bass

Simply a terrific adventure book…

“Seven Summits” is one of the best books I’ve read in a long, long time. It’s not really a book about mountaineering, but about overcoming personal challenges on the way to realizing your dream.

“Seven Summits” is the story about Dick Bass’ and Frank Well’s bid to become the first men to climb the highest mountain in each of the seven continents. It’s a story filled with determination, humor, grit, and the triumph of the human spirit.

Tom Brokaw says, “Seven Summits should be required reading for all who need a reminder of the importance of pursuing your dreams.

Clint Eastwood says, “Seven Summits is a book for everyone who’s ever dreamed of accomplishing great feats.”

optical illusion

When you stare at this picture for a few seconds, the cirlces will appear to rotate in different directions.

But the picture is not a computer generated graphic. It’s just an optical illusion. When I saw this picture it got me thinking about how similar it is to people’s fear of failure…

You see, fear of failure is what holds most people back from pursuing their dreams. Fear is just a smokescreen. Just like this optical illusion picture, fear is not what it seems.

Attack your fear with action. If you do what you fear the fear will dissappear. Guaranteed!

“You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face…The danger lies in refusing to face the fear, in not daring to come to grips with it… You must make yourself succeed every time. You must do the thing you think you cannot do.

Donald Trump and Robert Kiyosaki

Tuesday, October 17th, 2006

Trump and Kiyosaki just teamed up to write a book on investing - “Why We Want You to be Rich.” Robert Kiyosaki wrote the bestseller “Rich Dad Poor Dad” and Trump wrote “The Art of the Deal.”

By the way, the first and last chapters of “The Art of the Deal” are must reading for anyone that wants to see how it really does take massive action to become massively successful. Those chapters chronicle two weeks’ worth of Donald’s phone calls and ongoing deals. Trump is working on several projects at any one time to take advantage of the law of averages.

Most people don’t take any action. Trump takes massive action. And the results speak for themselves.

Done is Better than Perfect

Tuesday, October 17th, 2006

General Patton

George C. Scott as General Patton

As I was building my speaking business, my mentor would always tell me. “Ruben, done is better than perfect. Do something every day. Market yourself every day. Throw mud on the wall and we can always clean up the mess later.”

Most people wait until everything is perfect before taking action. Well… everything will NEVER be perfect. If you wait for perfection, you get paralysis by analysis. And NOTHING happens.

General Patton said, “A good plan violently executed now, is better than a perfect plan next week.”

Tony Robbins says “Success requires massive action. Today.”

Marketing is critical in any business. In the speaking business, marketing is 95% of the business. Delivering the speech is simply delivering the product.

Marketing is HUGE and must be done every day, as Seth Godin explains in his post Make Something Happen.

Hershel Walker and I at the Olympics

I got to meet Hershel Walker back in 1992 at the Albertville Winter Olympics. I was competing in the luge and Hershel was competing in the bobsled. Back then Hershel was playing football for the Washington Generals.

Hershel tells a story about the only two things you ever need to worry about in life…
