Success Tips: Always Set Goals

Thursday, September 28th, 2006

The purpose of goals is to focus our attention and give us direction. The mind will not look for answers until it has a clear direction. When you have a crystal-clear goal, magic happens. You start receiving ideas and thoughts that lead you to your goal. Life without goals is boring. A life filled with goals is an adventure.

Write your goals first thing every morning. It’s an act of commitment that sets the stage for a productive day.

Overcoming Great Odds - Squaw Valley 1960 Olympics

Alexander Cushing

Alexander Cushing - 1913 - 2006, Founder of Squaw Valley Ski Resort

I just got back from Reno, Nevada where Zig Ziglar and I got to speak for a terrific audience of about 4000 people at a Get Motivated Seminar. By the way, for more information on the Get Motivated Seminar or to order tickets for a future event, call Get Motivated Seminars at 1-800-431-8306.

While in Reno, I got to spend some time with my good friend Michelle Nichols, Sales Columnist for Business Week. Michelle graciously drove me around Reno, and Lake Tahoe. Then she took me over to Squaw Valley, site of the 1960 Winter Olympics.

The story of how Squaw Valley was awarded the Winter Olympics shows the power of a single person with a huge dream and the willingness to take quick and massive action while ignoring nay-sayers.

Mt. Rainier 2

Climbing Mt. Rainier One Step at a Time

I just got back from a climbing trip on Mt. Rainier. When you first see the mountain, you wonder how anyone could climb so high. You are excited and apprehensive at the same time. After all, it’s a completely new experience. Totally outside your comfort zone - especially if you’re a flatlander from Houston. (more…)

Success Tips: Scottsdale, Tom Hopkins, and Belief…

Ruben and Tom Hopkins

Ruben and Tom Hopkins flying in between speaking engagements…

I’m off to Scottsdale to speak at Tom Hopkins Sales Bootcamp. It will be great getting to hang out with 700 of the top salespeople in America. Some of the other presenters will be Dave Ramsey, author of “The Total Money Makeover,” and John Miller, author of “The Question Behing the Question,” and “Flipping the Switch.” Scottsdale in August… 115 Degrees!

I’m sure one of the topics discussed will be belief. Because unless you believe in yourself, none of the sales techniques Tom teaches will work. Here are some thoughts on belief…

Ildiko Strehli

Ildiko Strehli in her “Sled Full of Hope”

A couple of days after finishing my competition at the Salt Lake City Olympics I was sitting in the Olympic Village Coffee Shop drinking my standard four shot expresso. There, I met an incredible lady. Ildiko Strehli of Hungary.

She was in her mid thirties and I was 39, so we both stood out like sore thumbs in amongst the other athletes (The average age for winter Olympians is early twenties, when you walk in the Olympic Village it feels like you’re in a college campus where everybody’s in great shape. I looked so much older than the other athletes that almost every day someone would ask me if I was a coach!).

I asked her what her story was. How she’d gotten to the Olympics. Her story blew me away!

The Price of Success

Ruben and Rudy Ruettiger

Ruben and Rudy Ruettiger

Average people expect their dreams and goals to fall on their lap. They are not willing to inconvenience themselves for their dreams. They refuse to do anything outside their comfort zone to reach their dreams. They don’t stand for anything, they don’t commit to anything and they just drift through life. That’s why they are average. Because they are not willing to do what successful people are willing to do. Consequently, they don’t live life, they merely exist. They just take up space.

In order to succeed in life, you have to be willing to inconvenience yourself in a big way. You have to be willing to commit to yourself and to your dream. You have to be willing to face your fears and do some things that are very uncomfortable. You have to be willing to do the things average people are not willing to do. You see, success is not about aptitude. It’s about attitude. It’s about having the attitude that you are willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done.

Intuition and Self-Reliance

Thursday, August 17th, 2006

You have a path no one else has. You must listen to your intuition in order to stay on your path. You will encounter challenges that will teach you lessons that you must learn to reach your destination.

What others think does not matter because they do not understand. They couldn’t understand because they are on different paths. So it is ridiculous for you to explain yourself to others because they won’t understand. Explaining
yourself is like asking validation for your actions from someone who does not understand your path. Explaining yourself shows lack of conviction in your dream.

Commit to Excellence

Thursday, August 17th, 2006

Most successful people have something very important in common. Somewhere along the line, they made a decision to commit to becoming the best they could be in their field. They committed to excellence.

They realized that if they became the best in their field, the rewards would more than make up for the effort. So they made a decision to pay the price, do whatever they could, and make any sacrifice to become an expert in their field.

Eliminating Your Obstacles

Thursday, August 17th, 2006

Success is about getting from point A to point B. It’s about knowing where you are and knowing where you want to end up. It’s not about getting rich and diving a sports car (unless your goal is to get rich and drive a sports car). Get it? Success simply means you set a goal and you reached it.

Success is simple but not easy. Most people allow fear of failure to keep them from even attempting to pursue their dreams. They don’t understand that failure is part of the price of success.
