Ruben and Scott Manthorne in Portland, Maine

A few months ago, when I was speaking at a big event in Portland, Maine, I received a call from Scott Manthorne, one of the co-founders of Athletes & Executives, a private, members-only national organization.

Their members are senior-level business executives, many of whom are former professional athletes. A&E connects their members for the specific purpose of serious business networking.

Scott and I met for lunch and I was impressed with his passion for connecting people. He obviously enjoys doing it because by the time the waiter brought us the check, Scott had given me the names of a dozen people I could contact right away to help build my business.

A few days later Scott called me on the phone and gave me another list of key contacts.

Success Tips - Don’t Make Excuses

Saturday, October 14th, 2006

Successful people don’t make excuses. They could, but they don’t. An excuse is an alibi that helps someone save face when they are not producing the results they should be producing. Nobody wants to hear your excuses. They just want to know what you intend to do to get the results you should be getting.

“Excuses are a waste of time. Successful people don’t waste time. They use their time trying to figure out ways to be more successful.”

Cancun, the Moon Palace Resort, and Customer Service

Ruben in Cancun

Fun in the sun in Cancun

I was just in Cancun at the Moon Palace resort where I got to speak at a leadership for Evolution International, a fitness and wellness company based in Phoenix.

The Moon Palace is a huge resort (2000 rooms). It boasts having the largest pool in Mexico. The place was nearly deserted because last year they got hit by a hurricane and people are scared to come back during hurricane season. Give it a couple of years and they’ll be back.

The service was outstanding. I’ve never been greeted so many times in my life. EVERYONE, down to the maintenance people, gives you a sincere, genuine smile and wishes you a great day. They had to be the best trained staff of anywhere I’ve ever stayed. The best part was they were genuinely glad to have the opportunity to serve us.

There are several definitions of character.  One definition is how you act when no one is looking at you. Another definition of character is: how do you treat people who could not possibly help you in any way?

Success Tips: Work Though Other People to Win More in Life

Wednesday, September 27th, 2006

Developing people skills is important because you can accomplish a lot more through other people than you can ever accomplish by your own efforts. Get good at showing others how they can truly benefit by teaming up with you. Learn leadership skills so you can enlist people to help you accomplish your mission in life.

“Coming together is a beginning; staying together is a progress; working together is success.”

Gabriela brushing teeth

6-year-old Gabriela brushing her teeth this morning…

The time… 7:21 AM. I heard some noise in our bathroom, grabbed the camera, and caught a great Kodak Moment. Gabriela, our six-year-old Princess, brushing her teeth on her own initiative. That’s right! No one had to tell her to brush her teeth!

People Skills Tips - How to Make People Feel Important

Sunday, August 20th, 2006

One of people’s top needs is the need to feel important. By becoming skillful at making others feel important, others will respond more positively to you and to your ideas. By the way, this stuff will only work if you are sincere. If you are trying to use this to manipulate people, they’ll know, and it won’t work.
