Ruben in Cancun

Fun in the sun in Cancun

I was just in Cancun at the Moon Palace resort where I got to speak at a leadership for Evolution International, a fitness and wellness company based in Phoenix.

The Moon Palace is a huge resort (2000 rooms). It boasts having the largest pool in Mexico. The place was nearly deserted because last year they got hit by a hurricane and people are scared to come back during hurricane season. Give it a couple of years and they’ll be back.

The service was outstanding. I’ve never been greeted so many times in my life. EVERYONE, down to the maintenance people, gives you a sincere, genuine smile and wishes you a great day. They had to be the best trained staff of anywhere I’ve ever stayed. The best part was they were genuinely glad to have the opportunity to serve us.

Success Tips: Believe in Yourself and Believe in Your Dream

Tuesday, September 19th, 2006

If you believe something is possible, and your attitude is that you are willing to do whatever it takes for however long it takes to get the job done, then success is just a matter of time. You can increase your self belief by the books you read, the CDs you listen to, and the people you associate with. If you put good things in your mind, you will become stronger and you will believe more in yourself.

“Whether you think you can or think you can’t – you are right.”

Success Tips: Decide to Become an Achiever

Wednesday, September 13th, 2006

Pursue your dream. Make your life a masterpiece by being willing to pay the price of success. Achievers know there is a price to be paid and are willing to sacrifice, struggle, and work hard with no guarantees of success in order to realize their dreams.

“Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome while trying to succeed.”

Ildiko Strehli

Ildiko Strehli in her “Sled Full of Hope”

A couple of days after finishing my competition at the Salt Lake City Olympics I was sitting in the Olympic Village Coffee Shop drinking my standard four shot expresso. There, I met an incredible lady. Ildiko Strehli of Hungary.

She was in her mid thirties and I was 39, so we both stood out like sore thumbs in amongst the other athletes (The average age for winter Olympians is early twenties, when you walk in the Olympic Village it feels like you’re in a college campus where everybody’s in great shape. I looked so much older than the other athletes that almost every day someone would ask me if I was a coach!).

I asked her what her story was. How she’d gotten to the Olympics. Her story blew me away!

How to Discover Your Purpose

Ruben after Salt Lake City Olympic luge race.

Ruben in Salt Lake Olympics

I’m going to share a sad fact with you. When I speak at an Elementary School and ask my audience, “Do you have dreams?” almost every hand goes up. When I ask the same question at a Middle School, only half of the hands go up. When I ask High School and College students if they have dreams, only a few hands go up. And when I speak to adults at conventions, or corporate events, I’m surprised if anybody raises their hand. In fact, I don’t even ask the adults anymore because it just embarrasses them.

Benjamin Franklin said, “Most men die at age 25 but are not buried until they are 70.” What he meant was, most people give up on their dreams before they are 30 years old, and spend the rest of their lives in “survival mode”, living day to day, just trying to get through the day rather than living a life filled with passion, in the pursuit of their dreams.
