The Inner Game of Tennis

innergame 2

Whether you play tennis or not, you might want to pick up a copy of “The Inner Game of Tennis.” It is filled with great tips anyone can use to be more productive.

Here’s a quote from Timothy Gallwey’s book:

“The player of the inner gamecomes to value the art of relaxed concentrationabove all other skills; he discovers a true basis for self-confidence; and he learns that the secret to winning any game lies in not trying too hard.

He aims at the kind of spontaneous performance which occurs only when the mind is calm and seems at one with the body, which finds its own surprising ways to surpass its own limits again and again.”

Sounds like what my coach tells me after every luge run: “Ruben, you must relax. Be one with the sled.”

Robet E. Lee on Leadership

Thursday, March 6th, 2008

I just picked up a terrific book on leadership.

“Robert E. Lee on Leadership” by H.W. Crocker III

I’ve lived in Texas for 30 years and didn’t know anything about Robert E. Lee. He’s revered in the South and now I’m starting to see why. These are just a few nuggets from the first chapter. You’ll have to get the book (only 231 pages long which is nothing for a book about Lee) if you want to get the rest.

  • Lee was a realist. He knew life was tough and you had to be tougher.
  • As a realist, he had a clear view of the world and he knew what he wanted to accomplish (indispensable in a leader).
  • As a realist, he knew it takes many failures to get to a success so he was never crushed by setbacks. He didn’t waste time whining about failures or blaming others.
  • He believed that you need to do the best you can with the hand you are dealt. Always take advantage of opportunities.
  • You have to need to lead yourself before you can lead others.
  • The mother of a baby asked him what would be the best advice to give her son. Lee told her, “Teach him he must deny himself.” In other words, delay immediate gratification as you pursue long term goals.
  • You must have people’s respect if you will be their leader. Vices do not lead to respect. That is why character is so important.
  • The great duty in life is to deny yourself as you work for the happiness of others. The business equivalent is to focus on your employees and your customers and business will take care of itself.
  • Do the right thing because it is the right thing to do. Don’t do it in expectation of reward. The reward is the satisfaction that comes from doing the right thing.

In 1860, most people in the North worked in factories. They were “company people.” The Southerners were farmers - independent businessmen who were rugged individualists. When South Carolina secceded in December 1960 (because of tarrifs that hurt its free trade), followed by Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Florida and Texas three months later, President Lincoln ordered Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee and Arkansas to provide troops to suppress the rebellious states of the deep South.

Lee was offered command of the new army being formed to take action against the South. He was being offered America’s highest command with all the prestige and reward that came with it. Lee declined because even though he believed in the Union, and even though he had a feeling of loyalty and duty as an American citizen, he would not raise his hand against his relatives, his children and his home.

He said, “I shall return to my native state and share the miseries of my people. Virginia is my country. Her I will obey, however lamentable the fate to which it may subject me.”

  • Lee believed that it is better to suffer evil than to commit it.
  • He believed that by following his conscience, by doing what he though was right, he guaranteed himself the serene self-confidence that is necessary in a leader.
  • By doing what is right, even the worst outcomes will somehow will turn out right.
  • Look after your people, do what is right, fulfill your duty to the best of your abilities, and leave the results to God.

That’s just chapter one!

Ben Stein on God…

Ben Stein

Ben Stein

If they know of him at all, many folks think Ben Stein is just a quirky actor/comedian who talks in a monotone. He’s also a very intelligent attorney who knows how to put ideas and words together in such a way as to sway juries and make people think clearly.

The following was written by Ben Stein and recited by him on CBS Sunday Morning Commentary, Sunday, 12/18/05.

Dick Bass and “Seven Summits”

Seven Summits Dick Bass

Simply a terrific adventure book…

“Seven Summits” is one of the best books I’ve read in a long, long time. It’s not really a book about mountaineering, but about overcoming personal challenges on the way to realizing your dream.

“Seven Summits” is the story about Dick Bass’ and Frank Well’s bid to become the first men to climb the highest mountain in each of the seven continents. It’s a story filled with determination, humor, grit, and the triumph of the human spirit.

Tom Brokaw says, “Seven Summits should be required reading for all who need a reminder of the importance of pursuing your dreams.

Clint Eastwood says, “Seven Summits is a book for everyone who’s ever dreamed of accomplishing great feats.”

Donald Trump and Robert Kiyosaki

Tuesday, October 17th, 2006

Trump and Kiyosaki just teamed up to write a book on investing - “Why We Want You to be Rich.” Robert Kiyosaki wrote the bestseller “Rich Dad Poor Dad” and Trump wrote “The Art of the Deal.”

By the way, the first and last chapters of “The Art of the Deal” are must reading for anyone that wants to see how it really does take massive action to become massively successful. Those chapters chronicle two weeks’ worth of Donald’s phone calls and ongoing deals. Trump is working on several projects at any one time to take advantage of the law of averages.

Most people don’t take any action. Trump takes massive action. And the results speak for themselves.

Dr. John Eliot and Overachievement

John Eliot

I just got to share some of my stories at a corporate training put together by my friend John Eliot. John Eliot is the author of a great book called “Overachievement.” It teaches how top achievers think and why thinking like them will help anyone achieve more in life.

What I like the most about John is that he has a PhD in behavioral psychology and he teaches at Rice University, but he’s not your typical boring professor. John’s a terrific speaker who illustrates his points with entertaining stories. He’s just a great guy to be around.

I highly reccomend his book. It is filled with insights that will help you achieve more.

Greg and Ruben Park City

Greg and I in Park City at the 2006 Winter Leadership Camp

Greg Reid and I met about a year ago and we hit it off right away. Greg’s a terrific motivational speaker and the author of “Positive Impact.” A great book filled with commonsense principles that can lift anyone from the 95% who dream about success to the 5% who actually achieve it.

Greg loves mentoring inner city kids in his native San Diego. His mentees started calling him “The Millionaire Mentor” because he would drive up in a big shiny Mercedes.

In the last year, Greg and I have gotten to share the stage with Denis Waitley, Charlie “Tremendous” Jones, and Les Brown.

One of the best things that have resulted from our friendship is that we have created the “Winter Games Leadership Camp” where people can spend 3 unforgettable days at the Utah Olympic Park learning how to become better leaders, how to overcome their fears, and how to really break through to a higher level of performance while bobsledding, zip lining, and even getting to ski the best powder in the world with Olympic ski athletes.

Our next camp will be held in the week of March 15th 2007. As of today, there are only 13 spots available. If you want to be a part of this great event, you need to act quickly. Click here for more information.

Phil Town

Phil Town, author of “Rule #1″

Phil town and I get to speak at the big Get Motivated seminars. Phil is the author of the best selling investing book, “Rule #1.” Phil’s story is amazing. He was a Green Beret in Vietnam. When he got back from the war he became a river guide down in the Colorado river. He spent several years living in a tee-pee earning $6000 a year.

Dave Ramsey and How to Manage Your Money

Friday, September 29th, 2006

Dave Ramsey

Dave Ramsey, author of “The Total Money Makeover”

I got to spend some time with Dave Ramsey a few weeks ago in Phoenix when we were both speaking for Tom Hopkins’ Sales Bootcamp. Both Dave and his wife Sharon are great people. Real, down to earth, and completely unpretentious.

Since meeting Dave, I’ve been reading all his books and have started to apply the principles he teaches:

One by one in order…

  • Save up $1000 in an emergency fund,
  • Pay off all your credit cards off and cutting them,
  • Save 3-6 months worth of expenses,
  • Invest 15% of income in pre-tax retirement funds,
  • Save for your kid’s college fund,
  • Pay off your home early,
  • Finally, build wealth through wise investments.

Dave teaches not to go into the next step until you have accomplished the previous step. It’s all explained in detail in his books. The result of building financial security through these steps is lower stress and a much hapier home life.

His nationally syndicated radio show is terrific. I highly reccomend it. Read his books and apply what you learn. It will transform your family.
